U+22F1 Down Right Diagonal Ellipsis

U+22F1 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+2200 to U+22FF Mathematical Operators in the U+0000 to U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Math Symbol and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script.

The glyph is not a composition. It has no designated width in East Asian texts. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is mirrored into Glyph for U+22F0 Up Right Diagonal Ellipsis. The word that U+22F1 forms with similar adjacent characters prevents a line break inside it.

The CLDR project calls this character “down right diagonal ellipsis” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: diagonal, down, ellipsis, mathematics, right.

The Wikipedia has the following information about this codepoint:

The ellipsis (, plural ellipses; from Ancient Greek: ἔλλειψις, élleipsis, lit.'leave out'), rendered ..., alternatively described as suspension points: 19 /dots, points: 19 /periods of ellipsis, or ellipsis points: 19 , or colloquially, dot-dot-dot, is a punctuation mark consisting of a series of three dots. An ellipsis can be used in many ways, including for intentional omission of text or to imply a concept without using words.

Opinions differ on how to render an ellipsis in printed material and are to some extent based on the technology used for rendering. Many style guides are still influenced by the typewriter. According to The Chicago Manual of Style, it should consist of three periods, each separated from its neighbor by a non-breaking space: . . .. According to the AP Stylebook, the periods should be rendered with no space between them: .... A third option – available in electronic text – is to use the precomposed character U+2026 HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS.
