U+2020 Dagger
U+2020 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block
This character is a Other Punctuation and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. The character is also known as obelisk, long cross and oblong cross.
The glyph is not a composition. Its width in East Asian texts is determined by its context. It can be displayed wide or narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. If its East Asian Width is “narrow”, U+2020 forms a word with similar characters, which prevents a line break inside it. Otherwise it allows line breaks around it, except in some numeric contexts.
The CLDR project calls this character “dagger sign” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: dagger, obelisk, obelus.
The Wikipedia has the following information about this codepoint:
A dagger, obelisk, or obelus † is a typographical mark that usually indicates a footnote if an asterisk has already been used. The symbol is also used to indicate death (of people) or extinction (of species or languages). It is one of the modern descendants of the obelus, a mark used historically by scholars as a critical or highlighting indicator in manuscripts. In older texts, it is called an obelisk.
A double dagger or diesis ‡ is a variant with two hilts and crossguards that usually marks a third footnote after the asterisk and dagger. The triple dagger ⹋ is a variant with three crossguards and is used by medievalists to indicate another level of notation.
