This character is a Otra puntuación and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. El carácter es también conocido como factorial y bang.

The glyph is not a composition. Its East Asian Width is narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. It can end sentences at appropriate places. U+0021 prohibits a line break before it. The glyph can be confused with 6 other glyphs.

The CLDR project calls this character “exclamación de cierre” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: exclamación, signo de admiración, sorpresa.

Un signo de exclamación o signo de admiración[1]​[nota 1]​ (¡ !) es una seña escrita que denota sorpresa, asombro, alegría, súplica, mandato, deseo, etc. Se escribe signo de admiración de apertura («¡») y signo de admiración de cierre («!») para indicar el principio y el final de una exclamación respectivamente.

Este signo tiene la función de representar en la escritura la entonación exclamativa de un enunciado. En la pronunciación, los enunciados encerrados por signos de exclamación tienen un tono final descendente, pero con un momento previo de ascenso brusco, en palabras como qué, cuánto, quién, cuándo…

En español, el uso del signo inicial «¡» es obligatorio,[2]​ mientras que en gallego y en catalán su uso es opcional, incluidos también idiomas provenientes del latín como el francés.
