U+0018 wurde in Version 1.1 in 1993 zu Unicode hinzugefügt. Er gehört zum Block U+0000 bis U+007F Basic Latin in der U+0000 bis U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

Dieses Zeichen ist ein Kontrollzeichen und wird allgemein verwendet, das heißt, in keiner speziellen Schrift. Das Schriftzeichen ist auch bekannt als CANCEL.

Das Zeichen ist keine Zusammensetzung. Es hat keine zugewiesene Weite in ostasiatischen Texten. In bidirektionalem Text handelt es als Boundary Neutral. Bei einem Richtungswechsel wird es nicht gespiegelt. U+0018 verbietet einen Zeilenumbruch vor sich.

This character was created as an unambiguous alternative to the much more common backspace character ("BS", U+0008), which has a now mostly obsolete alternative function of causing the following character to be superimposed on the preceding one.
